John Rodriguez will never forget the summer of 1988. He was 15 years old and like any teenager, John was dying to learn how to drive. So his father decided to let him chauffeur him on his sales route from their home in San Antonio all the way down into the Rio Grande Valley. It was a four-hour trip along 200 miles of dusty highway, and each week, John took the wheel of their yellow Cadillac Deville with a renewed sense of adventure. With every stop along the way, however, John soon realized he was learning much more than how to drive…he was learning about life itself.
For that summer, John’s father, Cecilio, showed him more than simply the ins and outs of salesmanship. He taught him to treat every individual with tremendous care and respect. He showed him the importance of integrity, patience and dependability. And he instilled him with the drive, ambition, and determination that would eventually distinguish him in his own career. But most of all, John’s father taught him the true value of family. Because no matter how busy they were on their route, Cecilio always made time for he and his son to stop and visit aunts, uncles and second cousins along the way.
“My father was loved and revered by his clients and family alike,” says John. “He genuinely cared about people and it showed. Those trips not only showed me how lucky I was to have him as my role model, but along the way, I discovered the kind of man I truly wanted to be when I grew up.”
A Family Tradition
Today, John is proud to carry on the core values of his father. After putting himself through college and graduating with a business degree in hotel and restaurant management, John passed up a successful career in his chosen field in order to remain in San Antonio and raise a family of his own. It was a tough decision, but as someone who grew up in a tight-knit family of 10 children, it was the right decision.
